In part 1, I offered some gift suggestions for the dad who's into (or would like to be into) the iPod. So what to get the dad who's into movies and video? As a Crutchfield advisor, I'm asked that question a lot. Here are some of my favorites.
Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-ray player $249.99
Does your dad have a nice, new HDTV? One of the best things that you can get him is a Blu-ray player to really show it off. Blu-ray players deliver true 1080P image resolution, the best an HDTV can display. The Samsung BD-P1600 has some other features that can make it one of those gifts that keeps on giving.
Many people don't realize that beyond the fantastic picture, the soundtracks on Blu-ray discs are enhanced as well. Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio soundtracks deliver better audio fidelity. If dad's receiver has a 5.1 input then he's got all he needs to be able to enjoy these new surround formats from BD-P1600.
Does your father have a Netflix subscription? The BD-P1600 comes with Netflix streaming capability built in. Connect the player to the Internet through an Ethernet cable, and dad can access his account and enjoy streaming movies from his Netflix queue right away.
And if dad's into music, he can also use Pandora through the BD-P1600. The player connects to the music service and displays Pandora's navigation menu right on his TV. He can even create custom radio stations.
Of course the BD-P1600 also plays DVDs, so he can still enjoy his current movie collection. But thanks to some serious upconversion, chances are those old favorites may look a little better than he remembers them.
Onkyo HT-S3200 Home Theater System $349.99
A good surround sound system can let your dad be immersed into the movie or game so that he feels like he's a part of it. This is especially true of video games, where great pains are taken with the soundtrack and sound effects to make it feel even more interactive. Dad may have a nice, new flat-panel display, but if he's using the TV's built-in speakers, he's not getting the full impact of hi-def video.
The HT-S3200 takes care of that. It's got five speakers (two front, two rear and a center channel) and a subwoofer that can really pull dad into the action. And unlike the speakers of his youth, the 'S3200 speakers deliver high-performance sound without taking up a lot of space (the front channel speakers are each about the size of a milk carton -- the rears even smaller).
The receiver has HDMI inputs, so he can connect up to three high-def video sources -- like the Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-ray player. And dad doesn't have to be an electrical engineer to hook the system up, either. Color-coded inputs, outputs, and cables make him an instant audio/video expert.
Logitech Harmony One Remote $179.99 after a $20.00 mail in rebate
If your dad has a system with multiple components, then he likely has several remotes lying around. Why not help him organize all that clutter with a Harmony One Remote? He'll be able to control his entire system with the Harmony One.
And he won't have to spend all Father's Day setting up the remote, either. The Harmony One has easy-to-use web interface. The entire setup is done via a computer. At the Logitech website he just answers some simple questions about his system, and the proper commands are then downloaded into the remote through a USB cable.
After that, dad can just press a single button to watch a movie or listen to music. The Harmony One will take it from there, turning on the proper components in sequence, switching each device to the proper inputs and so forth. And without all those other remotes cluttering up the coffee table, dad will have someplace to put up his feet as he relaxes with a movie.
What if dad spends more time outside the home than in it? I've got a couple of gift ideas for those situations, too. As I'll explain in part 3.
