I checked with the research team, and the smart car is still on their list. Sorry for the delay. There's still no smart dealer in our town. Looks like it will require a road trip to get this done.

So I spoke with a Crutchfield expert yesterday (April 4, 2009!(!)) who said there is still no template. When I bought my Prius a few years back, there was no template for doing anything with that radio or speaker, and now that I'm looking into a smart car, I'm getting the same song and dance. It bothers me that Crutchfield doesn't seem to care about those of us, including those who used to be loyal customers, who wish to have upgraded sound systems in high mileage compact cars. It's been over a year and you still couldn't "find" a smart car? There are 5 on the lot up here in Albany as of two days ago...

is there any update on this? the smart has been on the market for 9 months now, surely there has been ample opportunity to conduct the required measurements necessary to get the car listed in the configurator.

thanks for the reply jim.

i noticed that there is a Vienna, VA, Alexandria, VA and Germantown, MD smart dealerships that appear to be within 2-2.5hrs of charlottesville, VA. although that may be too far a distance. I hope a local smart owner is able to help you out because i know there will be alot of people looking to upgrade the basic sound systems in the smart 451.

We are doing all we can to find a car to measure. Unfortunately there is no smart car dealer in our area. We have been in touch with some smart car owners who said they would be willing to drive to our Charlottesville, Va. location so we can take the measurements, but we have not yet been able to schedule a visit. We hope to get this done soon, but I can't tell you when it will happen. Thanks for your patience.

since the new 451 model of the smart fortwo has begun distribution in feb 08 in the USA and there are over 50,000 buyers waiting on the reservation system for theirs to come in, has there been any progress in obtaining the necessary measurements to identify applicable components for install into the new smart cars? when can we expect to see the new 2008 smart fortwo as one of the vehicles fully-supported in your online systems?

Thank you for enlightening us. We will measure the U.S. model as soon as we can get our hands on one. Meanwhile, any presentation of the system we put in the 450 model will explain how it differs from the 451.

It should be noted the smart car pictured is the old model "450" smart car. Only a few grey market versions ever made it into the United States. The new 2008+ model "451" smart car that made its way into the United States is a completely different setup. It is Double DIN!

This is truly cool..

I am really happy to see that the electracial system will handle an up graded sound system...i am just curious to know how much it will handle and if it can be upgraded to handle more...

"SPL" vehicles are what i have on my mind...
