Bad power, ground, or memory wire connection would be my guess.
The Posi-twists or crimp connections or soldering are the best options.
Twisting the wires together could do what you mention - or maybe one of the wires or harnesses got loosened during the speaker install.

congrats on upgrading the from the factoy system in your xterra. I have a 2007 and after my inital install i was having the same problems. after scratching my head for a while i decided to check the connecters that plug into the factory harness. and to my supprise i found that the ground wire was loose in the connector. with a simple push i was able to get a good connection and solved my problems.
This would be one of the first things i would check, consideing that you used one of tigers methouds of connecting the wires together. (i solder everything!)

I don't know what method cbruns used. I agree soldering is best, I just suck at it.
practice makes perfect Tiger...I use a cordless one that i picked up from sears when i was in a crunch. I fell in love with it.
*tip from me- i use small gauge solder for PC boards...it melts the easiest for me...
