marshallw3:I am leaning towards the Kenwood Excelon KDC - X692 for the head unit, and the Polk Audio DB1212 subwoofer/box combo with either an Alpine m450 or a kicker x400.1 pushing the subwoofer.
Has anybody had experience with the polk DB1212. I can't find any reviews of it online.
Two reviews here (manufacturer's site, though). There are more reviews on the 2 subwoofer model here, here, and here.
I am trying to spend less or around $500 for the head unit, amplifier, and subwoofer/box.
You aren't going to make it - the HU is $219, the sub is $229, the Alpine Amp is $150. I would go with the 300.1 Kicker amp rather than the 400.1 - the sub is rated for 360W and the 400.1 probably puts out close to 500W RMS. But the 300.1 will be much more than the Alpine. You're at $600 now, without the wiring kit - that's okay if you're okay with it, or you can compromise on the HU, enclosure, or amp and save some money if you want.
Post back with how you want to go!

speakers, no amp, no subs
The $600 dollars is fine i just did not want to spend a grand on my setup. I really like the kenwood x692 and the polk db1212. so what would you recommend for the amp - the kicker 300.1 or the alpine or another amplifier? thanks so much for the help
Any of these would work well - In terms of quality, I would probably recommend Rockford, followed by Kicker, followed by Alpine (but that is also by decreasing price, so ....)
I always use this calculator.
I would assume it is 400W and Class D, in which case 8-gauge is fine.
However, you might want to run 4-gauge as it will simplify things if you ever decide on a bigger subwoofer amp setup or if you want to add a main amp later.
Because my name is on the business, I work hard to make sure you get the best possible shopping experience. I look forward to hearing your comments .
