I tried installing a JVC KD-HDR60 on my 2002 malibu without a wiring harness. I cut the OEM radio plug and tried to match up the wires myself to the radio adapter. I used a 9V battery to figure out the wires for the speakers, and a digital multimeter for the ground, Constant 12V, and Accessory. However the radio fails to turn on. I don't know what to try next, and wouldn't mind some input.

Bad idea, BTW, but I think you figured that out.
Here is wiring info for your car, but I don't know if you have OnStar or not. Here is general help.
With OnStar, you will need the harness adapter to keep OnStar anyway.
As long as the radio has 12V ACC, 12V constant, and GND connected, it should turn on. CF says there is no 12V ACC wire in the factory harness and you would have to go to the fusebox, but another thread said there was a yellow wire for this on the 2001 - not sure why.
Hope This Helps!!!

make sure the 12volt cables are getting 12 volts still.. also try resetting the HU.. another thing is make sure your using the correct wires. I once used the proper harness to install a JVC HU in a saturn SC1 and well.. the harness was wrong!.. also make sure the ground is good and no connections are short circuiting..
