boat sub + tower speaker on 4/3 amp problems

This question is answered

In our boat we have tower speakers and a subwoofer, all JL Audio, hooked up to a Sony 4/3 amp (600W) and the sub seems to be getting about 5% power. There's movement from the sub but hardly any sound coming from it. Everything appears to be hooked up correctly, just not getting power. I've traced all the wires and nothing is out of place at all. Sub is bridged on rear channel and i double checked the +/- and it was fine. Any help is appreciated. I'm thinking that the guy we bought it from put in the wrong amp because the sub in here at that time didn't work when we got it. The amp isn't bad though, the tower speakers work great. Thanks in advance.

I don't see any way to turn off the subwoofer in the head unit - but it looks like the amp is okay.

Make sure the subwoofer level isn't turned all the way down in the head unit and that the rear RCA's are in subwoofer mode.

If that doesn't fix it - assuming the RCA's are in their original position - swap the RCA's at the head unit.

If the main speakers still play (bass) and the sub does not - easy fix - you have a bad RCA cable going to the subwoofer - replace it.

If the sub plays and the main speakers don't - you have a problem with the head unit subwoofer outputs.

First try changing the RCA's to rear mode and setting the fader to the midpoint.

If the sub still doesn't play - worst case, just use Y-splitters at the amp to send the HU front RCA's to both the front and rear amp channels and re-adjust the amplifier gain.

    Hope This Helps!!!

    Anyone else have suggestions?

  • Model numbers of the head unit, amp, tower speakers and subwoofer?

You might just have the subwoofer turned off in the head unit menus or the gain set too low.

Otherwise, try swapping the front and rear RCA's at the amp.

If the tower speakers don't play now but the sub does, you have a problem with either the sub RCA outs on the HU, or the subwoofer RCA cable itself.

If the tower speakers still play and the sub doesn't, you have a problem either with the subwoofer, the rear amp channels, or the output wiring to the sub.

From there, you can further isolate it.

  • Clarion XMD3 head unit

    Xplod XM-ZR604 amp

I forget for sure, but the speakers are JL axials, I think they're the MX650-CCX

    Subwoofer is JL M10W5

I switched out the RCA plugs from front/rear and it turned the sub into a speaker and the tower speakers had little power. Might be the head unit then?

  • I swapped RCA plugs at the HU and the speakers did the same thing that the sub is doing, so it must be bad output at the HU itself.

  • Thanks for your help!

  • No problem.  Glad it worked out - and like I said it could have been worse.  Worst case now is you use some Y-adapters and you lose control of subwoofer volume control from the head unit, but you could add a universal remote RCA level control on the sub RCA's if you needed that.
