I leave in the UK and drive a 2004 Chrysler Voyager but I can'r play mp3 on the factory car radio so got an aftermarket one but after fitting it there is no sound. I understand it is something to do with the AMP. On the driver side at the back I did see an AMP after taking off the Infinity speaker (there are four of them - two front and two at the back. I also see a couple of small ones at the back not sure if the front has the same. I was told there is no sound because the new aftermarket AMP is not powering the AMP. My problem is I am not sure what to do now. So any help is most welcomed. The part number for the factory car radio is P05091610AB.

Thanks,

Geek Squad connected the system today. All works well, except I'm not sure this is correct (2 items):

1. By turning on (pushing) the Yamaha "Effect" button on the receiver the center Bose speakers plays. When I turn off the "Effect" button off the left/right speakers play. Shouldn't the purpose of a 3-way speaker set-up utilize all 3 speakers? From what I've read up on isn't the center speaker more for dialogue (ex: TV show) and the stereo speakers for more sound effects on the TV show or movie, etc? But, bottom line, shouldn't all 3 speakers play at once with more sound coming from the center speaker?

2. Should I have the Samsung HDTV set to external speakers or TV speakers? How do I control the volume from the cable box remote OR the HDTV remote? Right now, to get the best effect from the 3 Bose speakers I have to turn up the volume on the Yamaha receiver. I would think there is a set-up (?) that allows me to bring in the sound from all 3 new Bose speakers (simultaneously) by using either the cable box or HDTV remote. Lastly, which piece of equipment's volume control (HDTV, cable signal or Yamaha receiver) should be set the lowest and which would be the main control to adjust the sound?

I know there's alot of questions here, but I really appreciate (and need) some expertise and thoroughness.

Thank you,

When i play the cd in my truck they play good until i get to a certain song then there is a slight static sound . The sound gets worse as i play tracks above the one track where the sound started. It gets so bad i really cant even hear the song. But i can go back to the begining of the cd and it plays perfectly fine until i get to a higher track. The disc plays fine on my computer,on stock cd players,on my friends after market cd players but it does not play good on mine.
If there was one area I wish Crutchfield would work on is showing more videos of the HU's in action. Granted I know with the constant flow of models introduced you cannot cover every model. But when it comes to display car Head Units in action are a serious matter.

We have 8 bit, OEL, motion display, variable color, dimmers, spectrum analyzers, graph indicators, text scrolling, to bright to dim. Granted also it's always good to check it out in person but you cannot always find the model you are looking at. Most of the time I try to find a video of a Hu in action via Google but it's limited and guess what...most hits come back to Crutchfield. Most videos like the JVC KD-S100 are a perfect example of what would be great to see.

On the other hand I'm looking a the kenwood KDC-MP642 and it has a long list of all sort of display options and types and I have yet found any video or for tha matter images showing what it actually can display. The image on Crutchfield is basically the same as everywhere else. I think if we saw 2-3 minutes of a HU doing a simple run thru would not only help buyers but may even put Crutchfield one step more ahead of other retailers.

The manufacturer calls for 3 cu. ft. per sub. For porting, they call for 2 3 x11 round ports per sub. The outside box dimensions I plan to use are as follows: 40"w x 16 1/2"h x 22"d. I will be using 1' MDF for the box and a 2x3/4" MDF baffle. I will have a separation panel between the chambers. The internal chamber dimensions are as follows: 18.5"w x 14"h x 20"d.

In the desing, the subs will be firing upward with the ports on the back panel. How will this affect the sound/performance of the subs?

Also, if I were to use a slot vent, how would I calculate the area and length required for the vent?

What would be the best material for porting?

Finally, any suggestions on what glue and type of fasteners to use would be helpful.
Single 12" Sealed MDF Enclosure

I seem to only have a slight understanding of what the gain is actually doing on the amp.

I just assumed that you would set the gain knob somewhere below where you could hear clipping... but this seems to not be the case...let me explain.

I just bought a 12" Infinity Reference 1252W, as well as an older amp. The sub was 8ohm bridged across the 2 channels on the amp. The sub handles 60-300W...and my amp should be supply about 250W, so I am not overpowering the sub.

The thing is, the sub just went out, and barely does anything, just a little rattling. I already have a replacement on the way, but I don't want to have a repeat of this. The tech support said that it was most likely my gain that had done this. I am assuming I messed up the coils or something.. because the cone and such were fine looking.

So what did I do? How could I have had the gain too high if I tried to stay on the safe side and made sure I couldn't ever hear any clipping? I read that it CAN be clipping and you can't even hear it... could this have been happening. If I am understanding this right... when it is clipping, the cone is pushed out and held there, turning all the power into heat, etc now. This starts damaging your coils/sub then? If all this is true... then I need to get my gain set right.

So, I have a line converter on both of my rear speaker wires with an adjustment knob for each channel. I would say I should max both of these correct, in order to send the most voltage into the amp input. Then I should set my head unit to about 75-80% full volume. Here is what I do now, I set my bass to about 0-30% on my head unit, because I don't want to be driving my rear 6x9s with too much bass since I have a sub now. I can adjust the bass then on the head unit to get more bass out of my sub.

So now I should adjust the gain on my amp. Turning it left increases the voltage, which means it does what? It sets the voltage at where the amp will provide max power? Turning it right sets the voltage lower, so it will give max power sooner, and start clipping more, correct?

Just for example sake, let me see if I understand this. If I have 2V on the RCA input of the amp from the line converter, and I set the gain at 7V on the amp, as soon as the voltage reaches 7V it will clip on the output? If I crank the volume on the HU the input voltage increases and I will start clipping more correct? So how do I balance all of this out??

It sounds like the hardest part might be finding the actual clipping point for 90% of music since it seems it can be clipping and doing damage, yet I can't even tell that it is doing so!

Lots of questions here... hopefully someone can explain the answers to me! Thanks :)

Car Battery Question

I recently installed 2 12'' kicker cvr's in my vehicle powered by a Kicker zx750.1 amp. It's sounds amazing, no complaints there.

But my amp is pushing out anywhere from 1,500-2,000 watts (kicker always under rates their products, so not sure on exact number), and when i turn it up, my lights start to dim and fade from all the power needed from my system.

I don't want to upgrade to a better alternator, i want a cheap solution.

At first i thought about investing in a capacitor, but the capacitor just uses power from my car battery, which will do nothing, i think? (anyone with better info please inform me on this topic)

Then i thought about a complete second battery, such as the optima battery. If i used that, it would make my lights not dim and fade. But than it doesnt have anything to charge itself, so it will wear down quickly. (once again, anyone with better info on this lmk)

So if someone, anyone can help me come up with the cheapest, easiest solution to making sure my lights don't dim when the bass hits, it would be greatly appreciated. All ideas welcome.

I have a 2001 Ford F350 Lariat LE(4 captains chairs) Crew Cab with the factory stereo (CD and cassette) and speakers. I was interested in replacing the head unit, with future plans on adding an amp, changing out the speakers and add a sub. I wasnt to particular about the CD/DVD options, but like the media playing units with USB (non-IPOD MP3 player).

Previosly i had replaced my head unit with a Ford MACH(Factory in dash 6 disc changer) unit (from e-bay lol) but did not realize it was a non-powered head unit and would need to install amps (the factory ones came with the deal) which was more work than i was willing to put in at the time.

After recieving one of the recent Crutchfield catalogues, I browsed Crutchfield to see whats available but was really disapointed and confused when i was directed to single DIN units. I know there are install kits available (or included?) but they typically add a pocket for the excess space, my truck already has a storage pocket under the stereo and adding another doesnt apeal to me. The factory stereo is much larger than a single DIN, based on the dimensons listed for the DD (double DIN?) units it would seem these should fit.

Can someone clarify this? Is it possible to put a Double DIN unit in place of the stocker?

Kenwood DNX8120 Ipod not connecting

I have used my ipod classic 120GB with my DNX8120 in the past and it worked fine. Last time I tried to hook it up, the on screen controls would not come up...just said "disconncted". I could control the music on the ipod itself while it was connected to the receiver, and I can hear the audio. So, it is obviously connected....why have the on screen controls stopped working?
