Hey,

I Have a 2000 Honda Accord Sedan with the factory installed reciever. Under the reciever is the cubby with pull drawer. It Looks like this:

http://a332.g.akamai.net/f/332/936/12h/www.edmunds.com//pictures/EVOX/2000/Honda/2000.honda.accord.20217049-E.jpg

Now the speakers are the regular factory installed ones, which crutchfield gives as :

 Front Door: 6-1/2"

Rear Deck: 6x9"

OK so What i want to know is if i want to replace the Head Unit of this car, what size does it have to be. ex: I, E, J. Crutchfield gives it as DD, E. But which one is it if i have the cubby?

Also, im replacing the rear speakers. So i also need to know, in addition to the size of the head unit, the outputs in the rear that it needs. I think they are called channels. but idk for sure. It needs to be able to handle 4 speaker, 2 in front, and 2 in rear.

Thanks for All the Help in Advance =)

Any head unit will handle four speakers.

As far as the size, just pick one that looks "normal" size (and one that Crutchfield says will fit) - that's a 1-din radio.  It'll fit just fine and you will keep the factory pocket under the radio.  Be sure to keep the trim piece, you'll be using it.

About two months ago I replaced the head unit in my '99 Accord that had the factory radio identical to the picture though I hadn't used the tape deck in years - I did have it hooked up to an Alpine trunk mounted CD changer.  It's a really easy install.  Pop off the clock using a flat-head screwdriver (be sure to put a little cloth or paper under the screwdriver to prevent scratches).  Remove the screw behind it.  Remove two screws on the bottom of the trim piece (just under the pocket).  Pop off the trim piece, disconnect the clock / hazard light.   The radio itself is held in by three or four bolts - once you get to this step you'll figure out what to do.

Back to the kit - you don't need a kit for a 1-din radio.  Do you have another car?  Order the kit for that vehicle in case you ever want to swap the radio to that car.  Of course you'll need the wiring harness, but those are cheap (free from Crutchfield, under $10 elsewhere).

What price range are you looking at, and what do you want to do with the head unit?  USB port?  iPod?  CDs?  And keep in mind that the color green will match your interior quite nicely.  Red doesn't look to good but I suppose it is something you could get used to (my head unit has a choice of red or green illumination, that's how I know what will look good in your car).

You need an E style 'Euro din' reciever to keep the drawer under or you can use the DD style 'double din' and lose the drawer.

Thanks for all the help =)

Head-- As far as the head unit goes, if i ever wanted a sub woofer, besides the extra channel (s), is there anything special i have to look for, as far as power or sensitivity goes?

I would like a head unit under $120, it should have Ipod support, mp3 CD support, and bluetooth is optional for me. USB is not necessary. Do you mind telling me which Head Unit you installed in your '99 Accord?

Thanks again.

In my Honda I have the Sony GT410U, here is a picture:

http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/3848/gt410u.jpg

It was a mid-level radio a couple summers ago, Crutchfield price was $150 though I picked up the scratch and dent version for $135 if I remember right.  There was another stereo called the Sony GT620IP which had built in iPod support but I don't know about bluetooth.  This unit is also a 2 year old unit but can be picked up on a popular internet auction site for around your price point.  No kit is needed, and a harness can be picked up locally.

If you want a current model and/or bluetooth capability is really important, look at the Pioneer DEH-P4000UB CD with a HD radio tuner, comes with built in iPod support and is bluetooth expandable:

Or spend $200 and get the JVC KD-S100 and a pair of Infinity Reference speakers - the 6.5" shallow rounds would fit on the back deck (Infinity Reference 6022si).  Add $25 for an iPod adapter.

As far as the subwoofer goes, I have no idea, I have never had a subwoofer.

I really like that $200 deal. The JVC KD-S100 seems that it really is good based on specs and review. The Infinity Speakers also seem really nice, or good enough for me anyway. I just wanted to know, since these two are the same price, and both fit my rear deck, which should i choose?

The 6-1/2 shallow (6022si)    http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1086022SI/Infinity-Reference-6022si.html?tp=95

or

The 5-1/4 speakers     http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1085022I/Infinity-Reference-5022i.html?tp=97

The specs seem very similar for both, so im not sure which to choose. I don't know if 6.5 is more powerful than 5.25 as a general rule of thumb, so if you could advise me on which to select, that would be very appreciated.

THANKS!

I'd go with the 6.5" shallow depth ones just because bigger is better, isn't it?  But I'm not a speaker expert by any means, in my Honda I still have the stock speakers.

I actually bought that JVC KD-S100 for my other car, an '09 Mazda5 but haven't installed it yet because the dash kit is on backorder.  I spent a little extra and got the component speakers, as well as a pair of the 2-way speakers (2 pairs).  Crutchfield has an interesting promotion, if you buy a second pair of the Infinity Reference (though I'm not sure they have a pair that will fit your front doors) you get some headphones for free.  These headphones supposedly have an MSRP of $150.  Just add a second set of Infinity speakers to your cart and you'll see what I'm talking about.  I didn't get this promotion because I was taking advantage of another, expired, promotion.

Back to the JVC KD-S100, read this review by CNET: http://reviews.cnet.com/in-dash-car-stereos/jvc-kd-s100/4505-6729_7-32852582.html

This is an interesting unit, I am looking forward to hooking it up and trying it out.  Just last week there was a price drop on it, effectively a $30 price drop.  Before it was $300 but you got two pairs of speakers.  Now it's $200 for the unit plus one pair of speakers, plus another $70 (total of $270) for the second set bu the second set is optional.  Plus the $150 headphones if you do get the second set (the headphones weren't offered on the $300 deal).
