Hey guys,

I've been using this http://www.crutchfield.com/p_023IPODCBL/Blaupunkt-iPod-Connector-Cable.html?search=Blaupunkt+VENDORID023&searchdisplay=Blaupunkt without any problems with my 5.5G iPod. Recently I tried an iPhone 3G and it wouldn't charge or play music through my car speakers but instead a message popped out saying "charging is not supported with this accessory." and the music played thru the internal speakers of the iPhone 3G. Same thing happened when I tried an iPod Touch 2G. I understand this is because of the new circuitry used in the newer models of the iPhone, iPod Nano 4G and iPod Touch 2G.

I found out about the Scosche passPORT that would help charge the new gen ipods but will it enable playback through my cars speakers? Reason is, I'd like to buy a new iPod Touch but would only do so if it could work in my car.

Any assistance would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hey oonline,

The Blaupunkt iPod adapter you have doesn't support playback with the iPhone or iPod Touch. While the Scosche passPORT will enable charging, it will not enable playback. I would recommend using the stereo's auxiliary input if you want to listen to an iPod Touch in the vehicle.

I hope that helps.

Not my area of expertise, but I am going to say probably that it will NOT do what you want.

Basically, you have two issues going on:

  • I forget exactly what the change was, but Apple changed which pins on the newer iPods are used for charging.  That is why the Blau adapter can't charge the unit, and that would be corrected by the Passport.
  • Since the Blau adapter is only playing music through the iPod speakers, I am guessing it is not compatible data wise with the newer iPods either.

(I'm a bit surprised that the unit reported it couldn't charge the iPod when it couldn't read or play data from it either, but anyway ...)

You didn't say what model Blau deck you have, but essentially there are two options if you want to use a newer iPod:

  • Swap the deck and/or the interface cable for one that is compatible with newer iPods.
  • You can probably use the PassPort to charge the iPod and get a M/M mini-jack cable to connect the iPod to the AUX input on the deck, but you would have to select songs and playlists on the iPod itself rather than the Blau.

Hope This Helps!!!

Anyone else have suggestions?

Hey thanks for the reply!

I'm using a Blau Atlanta CD34 if I'm not wrong.

I tried a 4th Gen iPod Nano and it plays music thru my car speakers but won't charge. I just tried the iPhone 3GS and neither works.

Is there a newer cable that crutchfield sells? I wouldn't mind getting one if there is one available.

Or I guess its a new iPod Classic for me instead of the Touch...

I don't see a newer cable available - the Atlanta does have an AUX input that you could use, but you would have to select songs/Playlists off the iPod itself.

yup i do know i can use the AUX input. In fact I rather control stuff off my ipod. But i'd rather do everything in thru one cable as it is doing now.

urgh. why did apple have to change the circuitry...

Will you guys be coming out with an updated cable?

CF doesn't make any of their own equipment (anymore).

I'm not sure if Blaupunkt will revise the cable or not, and it would be hard for CF to know.  (Pioneer support directly told me they were not working on an HD radio tuner and had no plans to develop one six months before it was available in the retail channels ...)

Hope This Helps!!!
