I have a Kenwood DNX 8120 and two iPhone 3GS's running the 3.0 software. I have had issues playing audio back since I installed it. I used the ip301v cable so I can get video on my system. Anyways, the music will play for a bit then randomly stop playing. The iPhone is sending the audio through the dock connector. Occasionally, the system will say authorization error. I called Kenwood and they know of this happening with a few others, and escalated my call, so I am now waiting for my call back.
Has anyone else had this issue? I read one person swapped their cable and it worked fine.
I received the same authorization error yesterday on a Kenwood DDX712 but with a 160 gb iPod Clasic. I thought the issue might have been caused because i went into artist browse mode, jumped to the very bottom of the list then "page upped" quickly over 10 or 15 pages of artist folders. The music tghat was playing while I was browsing continued to play though.
I turned off the radio - unhooked the ipod - turned on the radio hooked the ipod back in and did the same thing without an error.
I've never tried the iPhone on the unit (yet) - but it sounds like a seperate issue with the audio stopping and the authorization error you saw.
kenwood finally replied to me. they are blaiming the iphone and suggested the following:
1 - Reboot the device (already did, I have 2 iphones)
2 - Restore the iphones firmware (wont do any good since its more than one device)
3 - Try a different KCA-ip301v cable (ordered one yesterday, trying it tonight)
Yep - big suprise there (sarcasm...). And if you go to the iphone forums - they will tell you it's kenwood's issue.
Good luck on the cable. Please let us know if this resolves the issue. Also, if you ordered your receiver or cable from Crutchfield, please give our technicians a call. Their number is located on the back on your invoice. There may be some additional information they can provide.
Anyone found a resolution to this issue?
the cable didnt do it for me. I didnt get my system from crutchfield. The new cable seems to have fewer mess ups, but it still happens
After digging around on Kenwood and iPhone forums I coming up with the same issue of the blame going back and forth. It does not appear there is a solution at this time. Due to this, I'm marking this thread as a open discussion for the time being.
Isn't the problem related to the fact that the OP is using an iP301V and a DNX8120? The DNX8120 was designed for use with the iP300V, no? The 301V adds proper support for the iPhone and iPod touch compared to the iP300V, if I'm not mistaken. However 2008 model HUs require a firmware update to properly use the iP301V, of which there isn't one for the 7 and 8 series units!
Note from CF's Hands on Research page:"The cable is compatible with 2009 and later Kenwood Multimedia head units ...The KCA-iP301V is compatible with select 2008 and Kenwood headunits via firmware upgrade."Emphasis added.
I.e. to properly use the ip301V on the DNX5120/DDX512, you have to update the firmware. However there is no firmware update for the 7120/712 and 8120/812 to do this.
I have no idea why these units are the only ones to not receive an update (along with the update comes the ability to play videos from USB as well). It's frustrating that someone could buy a higher end head unit only to find out that lower end models have updates released to support features they can't while the manufacturer just ignores their model
As I noted on another forum it's interesting because even in their day the 7019/8019 had firmware updates (for other things), just not the 7120/8120. In fact even more strange is I wonder if these are user-updateable at all because if you look at the software info screens in the manual for the 7140/714 and 814, you'll see that the screen also has a "Start" button to update the unit firmware--something suspicsiously missing on the 7120/712 and 8120/812 Perhaps that is why we're not seeing an update?
the 301v is compatible with the 8120. theres a spec sheet on kenwoods site someplace that talks about it. Sam with the newer model hd tuner (but itunes tagging doesnt work, so teh 200 model is your cheapest bet).
Replacing the cable helped reduced the number of auth issues, but they still happen. now i have issues with bluetooth not always connecting to the 2 phones i have paired.
Installed a DNX5140 today with the 301v cable - so far no issues with my 3GS or 40gig iPod video - but I haven't gone for extended periods of time yet. My only issue is I can't find an easy way to access the iPod if I switch to FM and want to go back. Still learning the Kenwood GUI.
