I have the DDX514 (successor unit), which uses the same ipod adapter and in addition to the USB plug there is an audio plug for the head unit (and a yellow video plug).  The USB cable is for control, but the sound actually comes over the black audio cable- have you checked to make sure this cable is fully seated and in the correct plug on the back of the unit?  The first time I hooked mine up the plug did not fully engage, even though  it felt like it had.

tburrell is correct. If you just got a USB-to-iPod cable, then that is the issue. You need the KCA-iP300V cable to connect any iPod to this receiver. USB alone is not enough. You also need the audio portion that this cable gives to hear the music. The USB is just control information. Please let us know if this fixes the issue.
