I've had an Onkyo TX-SR606 since June 2008, and for the most part it has worked great.  A problem has arisen in that it seems that no non-HDMI inputs seem to display video anymore (but audio passes without a problem).  A Nintendo Wii was connected to Component-IN1 (assigned to "DVD" button).  For a while, the problem was Wii would not display video until I turned off the SR606 and powered it back up; this would happen about 50% of the time that I used the Wii.  Now, it no longer displays video no matter how many times I power cycle the SR606.  The SR606 connects to a Samsung LN52B750 via HDMI; previously, it was connected to an older Olevia 542i via HDMI.  Although the major problems manifested after the LN52B750 was introduced, I'm not too sure if the TV is at fault given that: (1) the power cycling problem occurred when I was using the Olevia, and (2) the Wii setup did work with the new TV for a few weeks.

These are the steps I took to troubleshoot:

  • Moved Wii to Component-IN2 (and reassigned buttons as appropriate) - no change.
  • Connected Wii to the composite AV jack ("AUX Input") on the front of the SR606 - no change.
  • Tried connecting DVD player to Component-IN1 - no change.
  • Tried connecting VCR via composite AV jack - no change.
  • Tried connecting DVD player, Wii, and VCR to TV directly - video displays.
  • Connected SR606 to TV via component - video displays.
  • Factory reset the SR606 - no change.
  • Have changed the HDMI output settings from "passthrough" to "auto" to "480" to "720" - no change.

I also noticed that the OSD no longer works (OSD setup, auto-speaker setup, volume); I am not sure at which point the OSD stopped working during the last 14 months.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try next, or does this just sound like a faulty SR606...and that I should suck it up with the extra component cabling to the TV or send the device in for repairs?  Thanks forward for any help you guys can shed.

It sounds like the HDMI circuit may be bad especially considering the fact that you no longer get the OSD either. Because of that, switching everything over to component video rather than HDMI would be the most cost effective as compared to a new receiver.

However, that Onkyo receiver does have a 2 year warranty and if you are still inside that 2 years, I would recommend getting it in to a service center.

My unit is doing exactly the same thing, I tried all the same troubleshooting you did with the same results.

All my devices are HDMI except for the Wii.  right now I am just hooking the Wii directly to the TV.

OSD does not work

Not sure what to do next

I have had mine since 9/2008

Thanks.  I ended up sending in the unit to Onkyo's repair center in Denver.  By any chance, do you know how long I should expect until the unit is repaired and sent back?  Thanks again.

I started with the 606, but before I received it from crutchfield I decided I wanted the 706. Thank god no issues! I wish you the best of luck with yours!
