I have a Profile AP700M Mono Amplifier and a 10" MTX subwoofer. I bought the amp with the bass control remote. I was trying to find a way to attach the remote to my dash without drilling holes and so i thought it would be a great idea to stick it to a magnet. about 4 days after that the sub stopped working. There was still power and everything going to the amp and the green standby light was on.
Is it possible that the magnet attached to the remote is to blame? i figured the magnet was not strong enough to do any harm to this simple dial.
thanks.
alright. so just to conclude this post. i called crutchfield and they had me run some troubleshooting. i was able to confirm that it was in fact the amplifier. To add to that, Profile went out of business a month or so ago. So the most i could get back was 50% off another amp, which sucks because i just bought a brand new amp 6 months ago... anyways, i just thought i'd let you guys know what happened.
ps. i went with a polk audio 400.1 (hopefully it won't die/Polk won't go out of business)
I doubt the magnet would be to blame, but can't say that for sure.
Triple check all your wiring.
Hope This Helps!!!

ok. thank you so much. i might have to check out the back of the deck to see if the cables are loose or something.. i guess it'd also be wise to check the actual wiring to the sub again.
ok. so i am 80% sure the bass remote screwed something up because the sub itself works fine. after plugging and unplugging wires i somehow got the sub to play again. then i decided to plug the remote back in and the sub goes silent... after unplugging the remote again, no sound returns to the sub. :(
i even tried swapping the sub for an extra one i had, but it didn't help.
I thought a bass remote was basically a potentiometer, but if it has any kind of coil or windings in it, the magnet could have been bad news ...
Don't know, though.
Anyone else have suggestions?
from what i can tell (and i'm far from an expert) there is the potentiometer connected to a small circuit board that is connected to phone-like cable that runs to the amp.
Depending on what's on the circuit board, it might have caused a problem.
Magnets and electronics are strange things - I know you can destroy PC hard drives and CRT monitors (and tube TV's) with them, but I also read a few computer case reviews where the drive door used a magnetic latch and reviewers commented on how well it worked (???)

I know it's not much consolation - but CF didn't have to do that for you - they just did it as part of their excellent customer service. Your warranty was through Profile and technically expired when they went out-of-business. Most retailers would have just told you they were sorry about that ...
yeh. just really bad timing and choice of company on my part...
thanks for your help!

Good choice. While it is impossible to predict future company stability (Profile was actually a shocker for me) it is highly unlikely such a scenario would happen with Polk. They have one of the dominating shares in the home speaker market with their home theatre speaker sales which will drive them well into the future. Absolutely fantastic service levels on their end as well.
