So I recently got an amplifier, now I had a 12" Sony Xplod that my friend gave me, but it was already blown so I decided to get a new subwoofer. Since all of my speakers and the amp are Rockford Fosgate, I figured, hey maybe I should get a Rockford Fosgate sub. Big mistake.

This is the p3 series which is supposedly supposed to have a great name, yet an hour of LOW played music killed it. I know that speakers and subs need to be broken in before blasting so I kept the volume low, I'm sure of it. Now I'm stuck with a blown sub and a cracked sub. What sub can take this amplifier?(I have the Rockford Fosgate P500-2 if that means anything to anyone)

Oh wow, I could have sworn it was 2ohm, thanks for looking into that, but actually yeah the subwoofer didn't fit perfectly into the enclosure.

Do you know how you wired it?

It should have been DVC-2-ohm with the coils in series for 4-ohms at the amp.

If it was DVC-4-ohm and you wired it in series thinking it was 2-ohm, you would have 8-ohm at the amp, and it just wouldn't play very loud (usually).

Now, if it was DVC-4-ohm and you wired one coil per channel (or DVC-2-ohm) and didn't feed it a mono signal, you could get the coils working against each other.

Also, if it was DVC-4-ohm and you wired the coils in parallel (2-ohm final), you could have sent it much more than recommended power and also possibly damaged the amp.  Double that for DVC-2-ohms at 1-ohm final.

It's a 12 inch enclosure, but when I put it in, the bottom didnt go all the way in, but it was only out maybe a centimeter, if even. Would that really make a difference?

You want an airtight seal on the box and between the box and the sub.  If it didn't go all the way in and you used a ring to shim or seal it, you'd be fine, but if not - yeah, it could cause problems - I'm not really a subwoofer expert, though.

And also which is more preferable? For the sub to have less RMS watt power, or more than the amp?

Everyone's opinion will be different - see this - Basically, you blow subs by sending them too much power, but you are more likely to do that with a small amp sending a clipped signal than with a large one, so I tend to like to SLIGHTLY overpower the sub.  You amp is rated at 500W RMS, but being a Rockford, the birth sheet is likely 650W-ish, so a 500W sub is likely good and I wouldn't go much lower than that.

Hope This Helps!!!

Well, your amp is rated 500W RMS @4-ohms, so you want an SVC-4-ohm or DVC-2-ohm sub.  Alpine Type R comes immediately to mind, but there are others that could work also.

Actually, I think that's a wive's tale - subs will loosen up and play louder after they are broken in, but I don't think you really need to baby them in the mean time.

Perhaps you had the gain too high and sent a clipped signal to the sub, but at low volume, that shouldn't have mattered.

Perhaps the box was incorrectly sized, or if ported you sent frequencies below the tuning frequency or it wasn't sealed properly.

Anyone else have suggestions?

Yes that did help a lot, thank you, but I really have no idea how it was wired, I gave it to Best Buy to wire it and they did everything for me, I really don't even know what ohm means or the importance of it.
