Hi guys, only just joined as everyone on this site seems pretty knowledgable.

I've decided to scrap my old sound system completely, apart from my head unit and build the system Ive been wanting for ages.

It consists of my Pioneer P5700DVD head unit
2 x Alpine 1222D subs (12" 500wrms each)
1 x Alpine PDX 1.1000 amp to run the two subs.

2 pairs of Alpine Type R Components (100wrms)
1 x Alpine PDX 4.100 amp for the components.

However, heres the problem.......I managed to score 2 x 12" Alpine subs for free that are 300wrms each, so I am playing with the idea of having the 4 subs in the boot and using the alpine pdx 1.600 amp to run them......BUT....are they just goin to get drowned out by the two 500wrms subs or is there a way I can incorporate them into the build effectively? I was thinking maybe by adding in an equaliser somewhere, but I'm not sure where I would send what....

Any help/advice/comments welcome....THANKS!!!

Dannyboy

2 12" Type-R subs and 1000 watts should cover your bass needs.  If you choose to use all 4, i would suggest you incorporate a way of defeating the second set of subs so you enjoy the sound quality of your type-R's on their own and be able to crank up the second set when you've got a craving for SPL.

It's tough to make 2 different sub systems work together and actually make the sound quality better.  The way i have had some success doing it is to assign one set of subs to reproduce only very low frequencies, and the second set band-passed to handle only upper bass notes.  That idea probably works better when you're using different size subs.  In your case, if you've got plenty of room in your trunk(that's a boot in US speak), i'd give the Type-R subs a suitable sealed enclosure since they're the better sounding, and put your other pair in a ported box tuned to hit hard.

k, I getcha.  I may put the 2x300wrms subs on a switch, to decide wether they're goin on or off, and have the 2x500 permanently fed to sub out.

Or maybe I will just sell the two 300wrms subs and use the money to buy the rest of the sound system.  Difficult to choose, it would be a shame to get rid of them, would be nice to use them just for the looks lol, and if I can get them to do anything extra, to add to the sound would be really good.

Would it be a good idea to chuck them in a slightly tighter box to get more of a kick when it comes to listening to rock music and getting the bass pedal goin?  then keeping the 2x500 for the lower frequencies?

J Ro has hit the nail on the head with using the second set for sound quality...  or SPL which ever you chose...just remeber "There is no replacement for displacement"  lol...

i currently run 4 subs in two personal vehicles...and i love it..turn them down for regular listing then crank them up to get felt bass insead of heard bass...

your choice

Also - not sure how far along you are with the build/purchases, but another option(s) would be either:

  • Sell the 300W Alpines and get two more 1222D's and run them off either a second PDX1000.1 or run all four subs off something like a Hifonics BXI-2010D (2000W RMSx1@1-ohm) amp.
  • Buy two more 300W Alpines to match the ones you have now, but run them off a 1200W RMS amp (at either 2-ohms or 4-ohms or 1-ohm depending on DVC or SVC and impedance) - The PDX-1000 would even work very well for this.

Either option gives you somewhat the best of both worlds - you have the four sub system for the "wow" factor, without having to balance mis-matched subs and sonic characteristics.

Hope This Helps!!!

I dunno about getting two more 500watt subs, would be brilliant to do, but I'm already grudging the 600w amp coz I never planned to take it this far lol.  That would mean paying more for the better subs and paying more for the amp.

Can see myself selling the two 300w subs and using the cash towards the components and amp setup, hmmph.

How good is 1000wrms gonna be in a focus hatchback?  Guessing it'll still be brutal?

Could you clarify what you have and what you are just considering.

You said you scored two 300W Alpine subs, but I thought the PDX1.600 amp was just considered after the subs were purchased.  And it was originally supposed to be a PDX1.1000 amp.

BTW, PDX amps are good, but there are less expensive options if cost is a consideration.

I currently have 2x300wrms type r's, 2x500wrms typre r's.  Awaiting delivery of a pdx 1.1000 to run the two 500wrms subs

Still to buy the pdx 1.600.  Wanna keep all the amps the same for neatness and looks.

If they are 300W and 12's, they are either Type E or Type S - not Type R.

I wouldn't get the PDX1.600.

Personally, I would go one of three two ways from what I said earlier:

  • Sell the 500W Type R's, use the money to buy two more matching 300W (whatever's) and use the PDX1.1000 to power them.
  • Sell the 300W Type E/S's, use the money toward the rest of the originally planned system.
  • Sell the 300W Type E/S's and buy two more 500W Type R's and another PDX1.1000 to run them, but I don't think you want to do this, and it's really overkill.

Hope This Helps!!!

Anyone else have suggestions?

Actually, there is a good possibility that they are Type Rs! It's pretty difficult to mistake Alpine subs, with the large E/S/R/X branding across the cone/dustcap, so I would trust the OP. Type Rs didn't always have the 500W RMS power handling, or the progressive rubber surround.
