ok.. so i gave my MA audio 15inch sub 175 rms from an alpine mrp-200 worked fine and sounded good. then i got bass crazy and got an mrp-m500 and it couldnt take 400 rms as stated so i blew it.. burnt the coils! it then froze and cone wouldnt move, followed by cone moving again in my house. and coming back to life and now im my car again.. it still is messed up as i hear alot of rattling from it inside the trunk. but inside the car it sounds decent. can anyone explain how this works!?
JVC KD-AVX44, jl audio 12 inch W1v2, alpine mrp-m500 , JBL GT5-652 fronts, audiobahn dub269's in rear deck, 4 gauge kit, voltage displaying fused distribution block:D .. all wired on my own. :D
If you have any indications of a blown coil, disconnect it from your amp immediately! Get it tested before hooking it back up, or you risk frying your amp too.
When a voice coil blows, it usually melts together creating a short. This short has a much lower resistance than a normal coil, and can spell disaster when hooked up to an amp.
...and yes any decent amp will have a protection mode/circuitry to help prevent amp damage in such situations, but it's not a failsafe, and can/will fail eventually.
02 BMW 330Ci, Alpine DVI-9965, Alpine MRA F350 5ch, Alpine MRP T220 + 2x Kicker 6x9 FreeAir, Kicker KX1200.1 + Alpine 12" Type-R, 2-Way Security, Keyless Entry, Remote Start
Sounds like you either blew it or somehow managed to get some sort of debris in the motor structure. It may still function and move a little, but if you are hearing scraping noises, it needs to be replaced.
lol.. yea it does scape.. but the akward thing is it did blow out as i could smell the burning voice coils it then froze and my amp went into protect mode. followed by if i push it down.. the cone doesnt resist like it used to.. seems pretty loose but if i push it down enough it hits something inside! i currently have it wired in my car again. i wired it at home and one coil produces a tiny bit of bass and 1 produces alot of bass.. now back in my car.. i dont know if i should feed it the 175 rms i gave it before!?
Sorry to hear about your trouble, shak. I recall having a lengthy discussion with you about that sub. Pity it gave out on you, but i can't say i'm all that surprised. The noise you are hearing is indeed a burnt voice coil. Ninja is on the ball-- don't continue using it. It can't be repaired and it's just gonna take an amp out with it eventually. Don't count on protection mode to save you over and over.
lol.. i was just gonna say.. wont the protection mode save the amp? or the fuses? but i shall go out to my car right now and remove it! ... glad you told me that! .. i cant believe i didnt think of that! also.. any reccomendations of a good but very budget friendly sub!?
Did you get around to building that massive slot vented box? Certain subs are better off in a ported enclosure. Before i suggest one let me know what you're putting it in.
yea i remember that discussion on the sub.. but i already had it so i used it until it lasted.. shouldnt have powered it with the mrp-m500! lol.. but for 40 bucks.. it was definatly worth it!.. and no i didnt build that box yet as i bought the new amp instead as it would last me and have me ready for many many years ahead! good thing i didnt build that enclosure or that would have wasted even more money that i dont have! :D as for putting in a sub.. next one is definatly gonna be a 10 or 12 in a slot vented box.. unfortunatly i have no money at all at the moment and need to wait a long time until i do have some! :( .. so no beat in the car for a decent amount of time.. :( .. hopefully i dont drive much as i hate not having my music with me! :( .. but any suggestions for decent budget subs that can take an MRP-M500 with a slot vented box?
Two subs at 250-ish watts each, or one sub at 500-ish watts?
2002 Ford Focus Sony CDX-GT410u Sony XT-100HD HD Tuner Stock speakers, no amp, no subs
any models to suggest? i was looking at a type r in a custom ported enclosure but.. i cant even afford that.. anything around 100-120 for the sub? thanks guys :D
Look at these.
CVR or the Pioneer's almost get you there.
Good BOGO on the Alpines or Kenwoods, but I wasn't sure if you wanted two subs.
Hope This Helps!!!
You're really pinched on options at that price, and your amp is pretty strong. Best suggestion i could make is a JL 12w0v2. The 4 ohm version. It's a very decent sub, rated 300 RMS, and works well in vented enclosures. Your amp is rated 300 watts at 4-ohm. Probably gets more. Maybe down the road you could get a second one. Still frustrates me that the subsonic filters on those mono Alpines are not adjustable. With any vented box, you need a subsonic filter. The built-in 15hz on your amp won't cut it, unless you are tuning down to 20hz (you're not, are you?)
i doubt i could tune a box down to that.. i shall let you know what sub i may get.. i was looking at pioneers and some JBL's the ones with a rock like look and texture. not sure of the model :( .. and yea.. i wish the subsonic filter was adjustable! :( .. but not bad at all for what i payed! :D
