is there really a visual difference in using the new upconvert dvd players using the standard format dvd? is using the s-video output on the dvd player the same as an hdmi upconvert signal?

There is some visual difference.  The sad reality is that a standard DVD is only broadcast in 480i or 480p [with progressive scanning.]  The problem for me, at least, is that the upconversion doesn't send a pure signal to the TV.  I'm just waiting for an affordable high def player and I'll skip the upconverting phase all together.

Of course though - there will be advocates of the upconverting players because of the increased resolution...

In reference to the upconverting DVD players?  HDMI is a better option for connecting between the player and display.

Oh man it was awesome this year!  The cruise is the 3rd weekend in August every year.  I'll make a thread in the off topic section for it.
