Crutchfield recommendations for my 2006 Tacoma standard cab list only two sony 6.5" speakers. I'd like to install the Polk DB651 speakers but was told they would not work. I just had a new head unit installed and the installer said there was 2.44" depth in the door and at least an inch from the speaker mount to the grill. A Polk technician sent a picture of the speaker and the total depth from the back of the mounting bracket is 1.96". From the top of the mounting bracket to the top of the tweeter it's .86". It seems to me that the speaker would fit. Am I missing something here? Has anyone mounted these speakers and can fill me in? Thanks.

Hello English444,

You have some good questions about the installation in your Tacoma and let me see if I can clear up a few points here. First of all, I'm showing the specs on the Polk speakers to be slightly different than the ones you listed. Based on the mounting specs we have received from Polk, the 651 speakers have a mounting height of 1.182". When you received the picture of the item from Polk, did they send along specs with it as well or were you measuring the mounting height yourself? I'm a little surprised at the discrepancy between the measurements if they actually sent those specs to you as well because it conflicts with what they sent us and also conflicts with their published specs. When researching this on the Polk website, I also found the height listed for these speakers to be over 1" as well.

That being said, I would also disagree with the mounting height available in your doors. Keep in mind, because the factory hole is larger than the speaker, you will need some type of an adapter bracket in order to install the speaker in the door and that will raise the speaker higher thus making the clearance between the end of the tweeter and the factory grille very small.  Our online fit guide is designed to be an "easy-fit" guide and we do it that way so people who do not want to do any modifications to their vehicle can find a speaker that fits easily. If you are willing to dome some modification in your doors, then my recommendation would be to go with the 651s version which has a lower tweeter protrusion and would be easier to install. Either way, based on our measurements, you will have to modify the grille somewhat. The 651s speakers would be a little easier to deal with than the 651 version because of the tweeter clearance.

I hope this information helps and clears things up a bit.

Thanks for the post!

The dimensions I quoted are directly from a Polk engineering drawing. I have the drawing in a .pdf file and a .jpg picture but I can't paste it into this message format. If you give me an email address, I can send it to your directly.

I understand that you’re getting conflicting information from us, the manufacturer, and your local installer. While I can do no more than Warren when it comes to the fit information we have on file, what I can tell you is: If you purchase the speakers from Crutchfield, you’ll have a 30 day satisfaction guarantee period with your purchase. If you or the installer are unable to make them fit, or if they fit just fine and you do not like them for any reason, we’ll take them back for a refund within the first 30 days. You will find the details of the Crutchfield Return policy on our website here.

Keep in mind; we want to sell as many speakers as possible, but not at the expense of customer satisfaction. While many retailers will tell you a speaker fits simply to make a sale, we’d rather err on the side of caution and let you know about any potential fits issues, before you buy, so there are no surprises during your installation.

The Polk DB651 speakers are known for their durability, efficiency, and clarity. If they will fit or can be made to fit, I’m certain that you will be happy with them.

I hope that helps.

It actually would have been helpful to have someone from Crutchfield check out the dimensions I provided. Also, I understand that I could buy them from Crutchfield and return them in they don't fit. But I would not receive a full refund of the shipping costs.  <Mod Edit: A competitor's> car fitfinder listed the speakers as fitting my Toyota. They also gave free shipping and will pay for the shipping back if the speakers do not fit. I went with <Mod Edit: the competitor> and will let you know if they fit when I get them installed next week.

As a follow-up, I did buy the speakers at  <Mod Edit: A competitor> and they fit without difficulty. There was plenty of room fore and aft for the speakers and the included speaker mounts fit as well. I unhooked the OEM tweeters as they sharpened the high register too much for my taste. I understand that Crutchfield cannot be absolute right all the time - no one is. Perhaps they can list these Polks to the Tacoma standard cab list as well. Thanks.
