hello. i'm looking at getting a single 12" sub to probably be ran in a sealed box (slight chance ported) i am looking for a sub that has about a 700rms and a 1500 watt peak and a class D amp with similar specs (hopefully a smidge under) i was wondering if i should get a 2ohm or 4ohm sub/amp? i would have to guess 2ohm because less resistance = more power. what are the differences here? if an amp states it's 4 ohm rating can i run it at 2 ohms? how does all this work?
All the class D amps that CF sells are 2 ohm stable, and some are even lower. Less resistance = more watts is a fair statement, but only when the amp's power supply can keep up without overheating. 700 watts is a significantly powerful sub, you should look at SVC 2 ohm or DVC 4 ohm models to give yourself more choices when choosing a sub amplifier. Here's some amplifier options meeting that criteria, though there are many others, and these aren't the least expensive ones on CF. Here's some subs you might consider. Any one of those amps could work effectively with any one of those subs.
The key thing is matching your amp and sub specs.
You could go with DVC-2-ohm and a 1-ohm stable amp, but CF has very few in that wattage.
In theory, you get better excursion control with higher impedance, but a 750W@4-ohm amp would be expensive. 2-ohm final is a good compromise.
Hope This Helps!!!
