System: Alpine CDA-9886 Headunit, Infinity Reference 6022i's, Infinity Basslink Sub
The Alpine HU is set at +1 Bass, +2 Treble. Most bass comes from the Basslink Sub (this puppy rocks!) But, when I get my volume on the Alpine up to about 8 or 9+, the Infinity door speakers make a rashing static, distorted sound.....similar to listening to a faintly tuned FM station..really scratchy, that overtakes the audio and sounds like mush with great bass.
There's not much bass coming into these speakers and this distortion is in the mid range sounds such as vocals and guitar solo type sounds. The tweeters don't seem to be overloaded, this is in the mid range. I get this on CD's, Tuner, Satellite Tuner and iPod/USB inputs.
I will be doublechecking this weekend that the +/- on the speaker wiring is correct. Any thoughts out there??? Thanks!!

Well, hopefully I found the problem. The Right Rear Door speaker had its polarity reversed. Once I fixed that, it sounded better. I don't hear the distortion anymore, until I get it up pretty loud (14+), which is normal amp overload. I'll see how it goes for a few days and let you know if it reappears. I've only done the audio testing with the satellite tuner.
But, here's a quick question. Could the polarity in one speaker only cause a goofy sound like that? Maybe, maybe not. Oh...I did check the cones and all moved pretty freely...didn't notice anything sticking or popping, seemed normal.
Are you sure it's both speakers, or 1 ?
Otherwise, it might help if you turn the tweeter boost to the lower setting, if not already. Also, you should have the headunit highpass settings set at whatever frequency you have the basslink lowpass set at. 100-150 hz is usually about right. I am sure you have already tried turning the midrange freqs down ? Have you checked the speaker mounts are tight ? Foam speaker baffles will help if it turns out to be resonance/vibration, etc from the doors.
A scratching sound in a subwoofer would mean a burnt voice-coil. Mid-range speakers can blow, too. If you can get access to them, use your finger and lightly depress the cone. If it scratches or resists movement, it's a goner.
Hey guys, thanks for your responses. The distortion is coming out of the front speakers. I'm going to double check the polarity on all of them today. The sub sounds great. Actually, I found a setting on the HU that can play the sub louder at lower levels. This helped the normal listening level tremendously. But, when I turn it up to about an 8 on the volume, the midrange turns to mush and static.
J Ro....I'll check the cones too for resistance. I'm even starting to wonder if my front speakers were blown when I got them. (could've been a repackage returned to Best Buy that they put back on the shelves) That would never happen, huh????
Polarity shouldn't do that - polarity should result in a lack or bass (or mids in this case) with the fader centered as opposed to fully right or left.
There have been similar instances to what you are describing reported with Infinity speakers on the forum, and Infinity handled them under warranty, but without actually hearing them, it's hard to diagnose.
Hope This Helps!!!

Well, after a couple of weeks, I still have the same problem. I'm really thinking the front pair of speakers are blown....not from me, but from the original packaging. I bet I bought a repackaged set of blown speakers from Best Buy. Bad part is, they're past the 30 day return period. Not sure if they can be sent back to Infinity or not. Just may end up getting a new pair. This time I'll order them from Crutchfield!!
I can turn my fader to the Rear and literally crank the volume almost all the way up and it sounds great, loud, but really clean. As soon as I open up the fronts, and get the volume up about half way, that tearing sound in the mids just washes out the music. The speaker cones felt and moved okay when I checked them, but I'm thinking the midrange is shot on especially my Front Right speaker.
I'm going to do a swap with the LF and RR to rule out the head unit amp. After that, it's probably a matter of ordering new speakers and installing them.
Pulling out the front speakers and swapping them would prove the speakers are bad if the problem switched sides.
Oops...I meant pulling out the FR and swapping it with the RR. (same 6022i's)
