ok so my boyfreind's birthday is in a week and I want to buy him an amp for his 2 infinity 10 inch dual voice 8 ohm... each sub handles up to 1000W peak power (250W RMS); 2 or 8 ohms... I have no clue what any of that means! What kind of amp does he need?

I think you mean the Infinity's are DVC-4-ohm.

That means you need an amp that is about 500-600W at 4-ohms. (or one that is 250Wx2 at 2-ohms).

There are a couple of ways to go with this. The least costly option would be something like the Profile AP1200 for around $169. This is not a true subwoofer amp, but it will work fine with that setup.

The other option would be something like the Sony XM-D9001GTR for $299. This is a 900W subwoofer amp, but in his configuration, it will put out 550W. The advantage of this is it is a true subwoofer amp (runs cooler) and he would be able to run more powerful subs with it if he ever upgraded to DVC-2-ohm subs.

There are other models in both series that you could consider depending on which way you wanted to go with pricing.

Give us an idea of where you are on that and we might have some other suggestions.

I would like to spend about $200. Is it possible to get a good amp for this amount?

The Profile AP1200 is your best choice in that price range.  It is a good amp, it just isn't a Class D subwoofer amp, but it will work fine for his configuration and the subs he has.

I just found another option that might be a bit better for you.  CF has the V318XT on special for $129 which is a 500-watt at 4-ohms true subwoofer amp, but they are currently out-of-stock on it.

Personally, I think Profile has a better brand name than Visonik, but the V318XT is a true subwoofer amp and it did get pretty good (but a bit misleading) reviews.

Not sure it matters since it might not be available, but wanted to throw it on the table anyway.
