A great camera would be anything from the Canon Rebel series DLSR or the even a Nikon D40 or D80.. If you just want a point and shoot, I have always had great results with the Nikon CoolPix line.

Is it a deal breaker? Probably not. But is it worth it? Yes. If you do a lot of shooting with a tripod where your camera and lens are stable than you might not get as much use out of an image stabilized lens. But if you do a LOT of shooting by hand with any large lens body than it would be worth it to...

I am considering several digital slrs, and am wondering about this feature. How important is it? Some reviews mention it, while others don't. What do you think, is it a deal breaker? Thanks

Welcome to the site mayo. All of the Cannon EF and EF-S lenses that you already own will work on the EOS digital line of cameras from Cannon. Good luck!

I have an old Canon EOS 650 and am thinking of buying a new digital Rebel. Does anyone know if the auto focus lenses from my old 650 will work on the new Rebel?

Malcolm: Nice, that is a great shot. I really dig the dark background and darker shaded couch material framing out the shot giving a lot of pop to the subject. It's a nice portrait shot.
