I would say it's really just a matter of personal opinion. I would hook the subs up and move them around a bit to see which way you like them the best. When calculating volume on a plexiglass box do you: include the are in front of the sub? consider the volume to be a ported box or sealed for matching a sub with the proper air space available?

I think what he was saying is that a custom made box can give better sound as it is made specifically for the subwoofers. Premade boxes do not always match subwoofers and thus can (not always, but sometimes) give worse sound.
