    Onkyo 705 vs 805

I was looking at the 705 in the Crutchfield ad and tried to order it on line. It seems Crutchfield is not offering the 705 anymore. Can anyone tell me how the 805 is vs the 705? Thanks!

    Re: Onkyo 705 vs 805

I own a 705, Very pleased with features and performance and of course the sound.  The 805 is just the "big brother".  Same bells and whistles as the 705.  More power 130 vs 100,better amp and power supply and lower THD(you will not notice difference).  The 805 is really big and heavy vs the 705.  It weighs 20 pounds more and is taller and deeper.  I think the 705 is the "sweet spot" in the Onkyo lineup.  Since the 705  is discontinued, if you have the room, buy the 805.  Best bang for the buck of all receivers out there.  High end features with a midgrade price.

    Here is a comparison chart:

Thanks for the help! I have read on other blogs that the 805 is difficult to set-up. Did you have much trouble setting-up the 705?

    Re: Onkyo 705 vs 805

Not at all.  Both receivers come with a microphone that allows setup in several different listening positions.  Place the microphone on a tripod at the exact distance and height of your ears at the listening positions and let it do the work.  Eliminate all ambient noises in the room that might affect the setup(children,a/c,washer/dryer,dishwasher etc.).  If you feel the need to tweek the settings later, go for it.  Most important, read the manual.  The interface is exactly the same on both receivers.

You helped me with making my decision on the 805. I still wish Crutchfield was offering the 705, thanks!  I am going to buy a Blue Ray also. Do you have any recommendations?

    Re: Onkyo 705 vs 805

I bought the Panasonic DMP-BD30.  A great stand alone player.  The DMP-BD50 trumps it now.  I wanted a stand alone so I could have everything organized in my AV stand.  PS3 is definitely the best bang for the buck.  It will do anything:bluetooth, downloads, firmware updates,BD and DVD movies  and games.  No other experience with other brands.

While I don't own one, I would also go with the Panasonic BD30 or the newer BD50 model.  They are very popular units.

    Re: Onkyo 705 vs 805

Keep in mind, Crutchfield does carry the TX-SR706.  A couple of extra features minus one great feature.  The 705 and 805 both have a switched outlet on the back that a coolant fan can be hookd up.  Not the 705 or 806.  really don't know why.  Do yourself a favor, buy a fan.  Here is the one I have:

The cooler you keep your electronics, the longer you will have them. Period.

I think I am going to get the 805. The fan is a great way to save my electronics. Thanks!
