Agreed. If the speaker distribution box was a less-expensive model, it probably didn't have circuitry to keep the impedance manageable for the amplifier. At lower volumes or for shorter periods of time, this typically isn't an issue. It sounds like you've been using this setup for a long time. You can test the impedance at various stages by setting up the speaker distribution box several different ways and using a multimeter to check impedance each time at the receiver end of the speaker leads. Anything below 4 ohms, depending on the amplifier, is likely going to cause damage to it over time.
