The HDMI switching is shot on my year and a half old Onkyo 606 receiver. Even though it's under warranty, I'm not sure if I want to go without a receiver for 6 to 9 weeks during repairs that may or may not permanently solve the problem. Would I be able to run the HDMI connections from my DVR and my Blu-ray directly to my TV and then run component cables from each of them to the receiver and still be able to switch audio sources? I'm sure this would drastically change the audio quality, right?? I'm in one of those spots that I in a bind either way. What's the best solution to the problem? Anyone want to throw some ideas out there? New receiver is of course a solution, but the last solution. Let me hear ya!
Depending on the TV, you could switch HDMI there and run digital audio out from the TV to the receiver. Or you could switch video at the TV and audio at the receiver with the source components feeding both. This is easier with a remote that can be programed to do macros.
I agree with you on the repair. It doesn't seem to me to be a solid solution unless the heat issue is addressed.
I talked to a repair center in MO and they said that the Onkyos were coming to the pretty regularly. They would fix the problem and the problems would reoccure. Now, Onkyo has redesigned the part that was having a melt-down, so the repairs are made with these new parts that can withstand the heat. They say thre have been no problem since the new parts were installed in all the models of receivers. I don't know if this is just "Company Talk" for the sake of keeping the customers off their butts, but I hope it does what they say. I haven't seen anything about new parts solving the problem online, so this is either new or BS. I hope it a solution. I do know that Onkyo has extended the warrenty on these models in order to fix the problem. Who knows, maybe it'll work. Repair shop says it'll be 1 week to fix and have it back. Hope it works!
