DAC Recommendation for Luxman R-114

This question is answered

Hello

I have an early '90s Luxman R-114 receiver. I almost exclusively listen to FLAC or mp3s and have been looking at getting a DAC and am hoping for some advice as to which one. Most of the files I listen to are at a higher resolution

I've been looking at the NuForce Icon HP and the Cambridge Audio DacMagic Plus. Do I need to get a DAC with a pre-amp or can I get one of the lesser models without the pre-amp?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

trey

  •  The Maverick D2 is a killer DAC at a great price. It has a tube and a solid state output and a tube headphone amp to boot. I have two of the D1's (with preamp) and I love'em. I have the upgraded tube and OpAmp, and the sound is just great. I listen almost exclusively to FLAC through a Linux-based server-client system through the DAC to vintage NAD electronics and vintage KEF and Jamo speakers. There a a few other forum members that have Mavericks as well. They are simply unbeatable at (or near) their price point.

Ryan, the owner of Maverick, is a great guy as well, and will quickly respond to any questions you might have (tell him Alex from this forum sent you).

That is an elegant piece of equipment and appears to be what I was looking for. Growing up in the '60s-'70s my experience with tubes is from old Fender amps. The appeal of the tube preamp in the Maverick is very strong and I think that's the way I'm going to go. I do miss the warmth.

I'll be running a Lenovo laptop to the Maverick and then to the Luxman. Due to how things are located the laptop will be about 8-10ft from the /Maverick and receiver.

Do you think there'll be a problem using a long USB to the Maverick?

The receiver is also beside my flatscreen and I'm hoping to run the optical from it to the Maverick.

Thank you for your recommendation and how you're using the Maverick. It helped to clarify things.

That should be no problem at all. I ran a 16ft USB to mine at one point with no issues.

    Again, no problem.

You are going to love this piece of gear.

  • Hey Alex

After a couple of weeks of researching, reading, getting confused, comparing and getting confused again I just sent my order for the D2! I got the OpAmp upgrade and it's coming with the tube upgrade tossed in. I can't thank you enough for the suggestion and your help answering my questions.

    Regards
