It sounds like these other peoplle that you are referring to who had damage from spikes may be experiencing a problem where the alternator either sent to high or to low voltage amounts to the onboard computer and caused it to malfunction. This is strictly a guess on my part and is an issue that should probably be addressed by a mechanic. I would say that damage to a computer like this because of a power spike would be extremely rare.
