I recently took some much-needed time off. Williamsburg, Virginia
isn't exactly the vacation capital of the world, but it's a nice town with a
lot of available activities. Among them, the one thing I did the most which I
could never do at home in Charlottesville
— nothing.

Of course I'm not talking about staring at the walls or
watching the carpet grow, but I did a lot of relaxing. For me, though, that
requires music. My iPod® has more than a week's worth of music with enough
variety to keep me engaged. But even the most comfortable headphones get old
after a while.

Fortunately, I packed the Bose® SoundDock®. Even though it wasn't technically a portable speaker system, The SoundDock had, typical of Bose, big sound in a small package. From Rock, 80s Pop,
through Christian (in various genres), Techno, and on to Classical, it allowed my music
to flow with depth, clarity, and punchy bass.

It had enough gusto to rock the neighbors, so I
was
conscientious about keeping the volume at a friendly level. The
SoundDock gave me full, rich sound when it was cranked up, but it also sounded great at low to moderate
volume levels.

The SoundDock comes with a number of fittings to accommodate
various iPods. I found that with the case I have for my 160GB iPod classic, though, I didn't
even need an adapter. The case filled the gap perfectly. The remote control let me adjust the volume and advance or back up the track, as well as
play and pause, and toggle the power. The remote is a must for vacationing,
which is all about living the good life.

The only complaint I had with the
SoundDock, was that the connection between the power cord and the back of the system could be somewhat difficult to manage. The plug has four small pins that push
into sockets on the back of the unit. A couple of times I put them in incorrectly. It didn't cause any harm, but it didn't make the SoundDock function, either. The pins are also a bit malleable, and so they bent
easily when I was trying to plug in the cord.

As long as I was careful, though, everything was fine. And for anyone who plans to keep the SoundDock in one location (night stand, bookshelf, etc) this concern won't even apply.

My vacation was a huge success. I had the time off I needed, I had the tunes I wanted, and my neighbors had the peace they expected. Now that I'm home, all bets are off.
