I have a 1992 Chevrolet Camaro (Third Gen) T-Top hatchback.

I have avenues of approach for subwoofers. I have the Choice between a single JL Audio 12W7 or...

A pair of JL Audio 12W6V2's

Either would be powered with a JL 1000/1 amp but im torn between the two. I have not been into car audio since high school and forgot just about all i learned. What are the pro's and cons VS the two. Will 2 W6's hit harder then a single W7? should i go ported or unported? Should i hook up all three? Im lost in this area and would appreciate any help??? do i need to spend this much on an amp or is there a comparible amp for a fraction of the Price?

When subwoofers face up, they do not give the same performance as subwoofers facing in or out (forward or backward). Now, bass is unidirectional so, the sound would be similar (depending on the vehicle), but the impact (the punch of the bass) will not be the same. You will lose some of the impact from the subwoofers facing upwards. I know that it will be hard to find a premade box that will have all four subwoofers facing the same direction. If this is what you want, then you may need to check with a local custom installer to see if a box can be made the way you want.

lost in an ocean

Its been about 6 years since I've even looked at audio components for a vehicle and there are just so many new things out there (and I've forgotten almost all that i learned) that I am just lost in an ocean of choices and options.

First off I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4 Door 4wd SuperCab. The front and rear speakers are both 6x8s and the head unit depth is 7-1/2" with the sizes as E, F2, S, and U.

My most obvious dilemma is; what to get for my car? I know that everyone has their own opinions and that people will disagree on what is better or what is worse but after reading the FAQ and Help sections on the site and even reading Customer Reviews on many items I am still no closer to deciding what the best route to take is.

I am looking for dang near everything for my truck; new head unit, front and rear speakers, amp and subwoofer. So pretty much the nitty gritty of this post is can someone help me build a good full sounding system for my truck? I mainly listen to rock and punk but am known to bust out a good hip hop track every so often. MP3 Playback and IPod connectivity would be necessary as well as XM and HD Radio tuning already in the head unit would be highly preferred. I would (needless to say) like to go as cheap as possible but wouldn't mind going around $500-750 (more would be ok if it was worth it) on the whole thing.

OTHER QUESTIONS/CONCERNS:

- I don't know if its best to stick with one brand all the way through (alpine receiver, speakers, and sub) or to mix and match brands.
- I would like to shy away from component systems as they seem a bit too intricate for me to install myself and I would prefer not to get a kick panel.
- The site says that 5-1/4" will fit into my truck, as well as 5x7s; is it really "the bigger the better" and go with the 6x8s or is it better to get the round 5-1/4" rather than an oval shaped 6x8 or 5x7s?
- Is an amp a good idea to get to supplement power to the speakers as well as the sub? And can I power both the sub and the speakers with the same amp?
- Should I go after 2 way speakers and get a sub or 3 ways and a sub? ACK! I tried to get an estimate from a stereo shop today. The installer was cool and we came up with a plan for getting the 8's in an enclosure and where I wanted them. I went inside talked to the salesman and he quoted me $1100 for 2 MTX 8" 5500's a powerbass 800 watt 2 channel amp a hi low adapter, amp kit and shop fees. Plus $600 for the custom boxes.

His price on the woofers was 199. I see them here for more like 80. So now I am worried that anything the saleman tolds me was BS. I want to do this right. I have been dreaming of buiulding a custom ride for a long time and this xB is my first shot at it. I don't want to screw it up by spending a ton of money on a custom install only to find out I bought the cheap stuff and got ripped off. So I am here to ask the experts.

I listen to all types of music but I listen to a lot of Hip Hop and want that deep "wake the neighbors" type bass. I don't need the actual decibles to wake my neighbors, but thats the only way I know how to describe it.

thanks for any help you can provide.

Sub/Amp Selection...

ok now i got a debate on which brand of sub/amp 2 get.
