  • Car Audio install from hell - need big help

I have spent the last 4-5 weeks planning and preparing to install all of my old equipment (along with some new stuff) into my older ('96) Lexus sedan. I spent a week designing boxes for 3 12" subwoofers for the rear. I used Google Sketch (a 3D program) and my dad and I cut each piece of wood...

Gas mileage is a big issue with an ever-increasing number of people. Most recently, the "Cash for Clunkers" program has resulted in a lot of people driving more compact vehicles. 600 hz Bass Blockers if 4 ohm, 50 watts and under. 800 hz Bass Blockers if 4 ohm, over 50 watts. They come in pairs. You need 2 pair. Simple to install on the positive speaker terminal and work like a charm. Doesn't your headunit have high pass settings for the speaker outputs ? Only problem I see...

  • Replace fact. speakers 07 Silverado...suggestions?

I just bought a used 07 silverado. Its the lowest trim available...I'm assuming. I think technically the trim is PK. The speakers are very lacking and I want to replace them. I don't know much about car audio but what I'm looking for is something that will provide decent highs and bass that I can feel...

  • Top Down Sound, Part 4: Equalizing the audio system in a convertible

Jeff and I meet at the Crutchfield Research Bay for the final system tuneup. In the last installment , we set the crossover points and adjusted the gain structure in the Sebring's system. Now, we've borrowed an AudioControl Real Time Analyzer (RTA), a complex little box that's used to measure...

  • Top Down Sound, Part 2: Installing an audio system in a convertible

The big day has arrived. In the first installment , we planned out the system for my convertible. Now we'll take a long look at the installation process. A system of this magnitude is completely out of my league, so I turn to Ben and Wayne, two ace installers who also maintain Crutchfield's car...

  • Top Down Sound, Part 1: Planning an audio system for a convertible

For most people, the words "car audio" conjure up an image of a big SUV blasting you with waves of bass at a stoplight. But car audio systems aren't all about bass - they come in as many shapes and sizes as home audio systems. To the car audio fan, each new car offers the challenge of how...

  • Car stereos that bypass your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter

For some time now, we've been offering two tips to people who want to get great sound when they connect their iPod to a home audio system: Import (rip) your music at a higher bit rate , preferrably in the Apple Lossless format. Bypass your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter (DAC), by means of...

  • Better car audio, Tip #11: Use high-quality cables for your amplifiers

Electricity's like running water. You wouldn't run a garden hose from your well to your house, because not enough water would get through to keep up with demand. That's why you don't want to use cheap, undersized power cable to get power to your amplifiers — the amp will be starved for power when you...

  • Better car audio, Tip #10: Use a capacitor if you're going to push your subs hard

They didn't have subwoofers in mind when they built your vehicle. Big bass sucks up a lot of power, and most car electrical systems aren't equipped to deal with it. A capacitor acts as a buffer between your amps and your car's battery. You connect the cap inline on the power cable from your battery,...
