  • Father's Day Gift Ideas-- Part 2: Home entertainment

In part 1 , I offered some gift suggestions for the dad who's into (or would like to be into) the iPod. So what to get the dad who's into movies and video? As a Crutchfield advisor, I'm asked that question a lot. Here are some of my favorites. Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-ray player $249.99 Does your dad have...

  • High Defintion Player

I have a Sony 65" 1080i DLP and Onkyo 7.1 TX-SR506 connect to my HTPC under WinXP, it is not the best of the word, but pretty decent sound when i play BR disc in my HTPC... I really want to hear DTS-HD 7.1 sound with my Onkyo, but i think I got a problem with my HTPC of supporting DTS-HD... I have a...

  • Re: HT - Upgrade

Hey kalexan3, I know this post is old....but just incase you haven't got the Mirage Nanosat's yet: Another option to consider would be to get two floorstanding speakers for upfront and a new center channel. Nothing too big, maybe the primus 362's up front - or something w/6.5" woofers. And for a decent...

  • Re: Need Help Understanding/Selecting Yamaha (e.g., 663) Sound Field Programs/Straight/Pure

Bob, I can see why you need help/are confused. I found the manual online for and it is the most uneccessarily complicated thing I have ever seen. In the future, get an Onkyo. The setup is wayy easier. IF you had an Onkyo for instance, all you would have to do is press "setup" until "spkr config" showed...

  • Re: need a new receiver

hey, I have the whole beta line-up (minus the CSW-10 ) and they are powered with an Onkyo 674 receiver. I think the Onkyo's are easier to set up and navigate through the menus compared to Denon's line-up. Denon makes some nice products, but under $1500 I'd stay with Onkyo. $1500 plus, go to an Integra...

  • Feeling Centered

When you work in an industry that's part of the retail world, you frequently feel that tug-of-war between prudent family finance, and wanting the latest cool thing that your company makes or sells. So, you know, clothing designers always have the coolest clothes, and Rolls-Royce salespeople are presumably...

  • Enjoying your home theater system on a budget

Like a lot of people, I've been watching what I spend lately. Luckily, it's been easy thanks to our home theater system. My boyfriend and I made the investment, and put together a nice home theater system about a year ago: a high-def TV and home theater receiver , a set of surround sound speakers , a...

  • Can't Determine the Best A/V Receiver for Around $1,000

I'm at a standstill trying to determine the best 7.1 receiver that has at least one additional sound zone capability for a price point of around $1,000. My hunt so far has pointed me towards (3) potential units, although I am not opposed to any suggestions for other receivers from someone. The line-up...

  • family room home theater

I am setting up a small home theater for our family room for six kids. It has a Samsung LCD, and I am considering the Onkyo 706 as the receiver to run components through. These would include: a Nintendo Wii, a PlayStation 3 and an older DVD/VCR player. The question, do you think the Onkyo Tx-SR706 an...

  • Audio in the Blu-ray era

Blu-ray Disc™ can deliver great sound in addition to a great picture, but how Blu-ray players handle some of the new audio formats like Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD™ Master Audio seems to remain a mystery to many people. Do the players decode them internally? Do you need a receiver that decodes them? And...

  • What's at the top of your wish list? (Here's what's on ours)

Naturally, people around here are always talking about the latest, greatest electronic gear. I have a long list of things I hope to own soon, and I sometimes wonder what my friends at work would love to have. Thanks to a recent informal, open-ended poll we took at Crutchfield, I was able to find out...

  • Three room-friendly ways to get surround sound

I've become something of an ambassador for surround sound. Having enjoyed it for four years now, I simply can't let any of my friends or family upgrade their TV without also upgrading their sound. And invariably, when I'm halfway through extolling the virtues of multichannel sound, how it makes movies...
