  • Tech Terms Demystified: HDMI Switching and HDMI Repeating

HDMI Switching ''HDMI Switching'' is one of those terms that sounds terribly complicated and technical, but turn out to be relatively simple and straight forward. In a nutshell, a receiver with HDMI switching can select a single signal from any of the HDMI inputs going into it to send through its HDMI output. Need a little more detail? ...

  • Re: Popping Noice from Home Theater Receiver

Given the testing that you have done, it very well could be the receiver. However, I know that Bose Acoustimass systems have the bass module that the speakers run into. If you have one of these systems as your theater system, then it could be the bass module. You may want to try connecting the left surround speaker into a different channel to see ...

  • Moving music with the Logitech Squeezebox Duet

I just flashed back to my first record player. It played 45s, and when it skipped, I put a penny on the arm. Remember doing that? A handle on the side let me carry it around the house to play songs for my brothers — moving music the old-fashioned way. These days, I have a lot of MP3 songs stored on my computer. The Internet also holds a ...

  • From Coax to Speakers?

I distribute a standard-definition television signal throughout my home on channel 3 via RG6 coaxial cable.  I'd like to have a pair of speakers in one of the rooms play the audio from the television signal.  I'd like to use a minimal amount of gear in that room to power the speakers.  Just a volume knob, really.   What is ...

  • '05 Tacoma

I was looking to purchase the Pioneer DEH-P7000BT for my ''05 Tacoma, but saw there might be an issue with the motorized face not working properly due to clearance issues. Has anyone installed this Pioneer model? and if so, were there any mods needed?

  • Going Bananas About Connectors

In my last post, I talked about a tool that simplifies the process of stripping wire. Once the wire’s prepped for connection, the question becomes, “Now what?” There are many different connection options, each with advantages and disadvantages. Of course you can just connect bare wire into the speaker or receiver. That option seems easy enough ...

  • Still a "go" with stereo -- the Onkyo TX-8222 stereo receiver

When my old stereo receiver finally gave up the ghost (after 20 years of distinguished service) it was time to hit the store and get another. The home stereo landscape has changed quite a bit since I bought my old Sony. Back then, you bought a stereo receiver for your home system — period. Now a quick look at the product pages at crutchfield.com ...

  • Home Receiver / Server + External USB HD?

Hi all, I'm wondering if anybody knows of a quality home A/V receiver or even a standalone unit that can read music files off of a standard USB hard drive (like a Passport or something). A digital music server could work as well, as long as it could play from my USB device. Anybody know of anything like this? Thanks!

  • My Top 10 Car Audio Myths

    1) I don't need a subwoofer because I never listen to loud music, just classical and jazz.Subwoofers go great with heavy metal, rap, and other types of high-impact music, but they're not just for people who like to turn it up. In fact, a well-tuned subwoofer adds depth and richness to any type of music, and allows your full-range speakers to do a ...
  • Are you sitting on a wealth of untapped power?

In my last post, I discussed the concept of bi-wiring. Although bi-wiring doesn’t increase the amount of power going to a pair of speakers many folks I’ve spoken with felt there’s a noticeable improvement in sound quality.   That brings us to the subject of bi-amping.   If you’ve purchased a seven-channel home theater receiver in ...
